At Fort Worth LAP-BAND®, our surgeons take pride in offering the latest technology in weight-loss surgery. We are very excited to announce the addition of the New iBand procedure, a breakthrough in surgical treatment for obesity. The Banded Gastric Plication is a promising new procedure that combines the benefits of the Laparoscopic Gastric Plication with the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (also known as LAP-BAND®). Both procedures are respectively known for their effectiveness at achieving significant and durable weight loss. Neither weight loss procedure involves cutting, stapling or re-routing of the intestinal tract. Instead, a LAP-BAND®, or adjustable gastric band, is wrapped around the top part of the stomach as is done in the traditional gastric banding procedure, and the larger remaining portion of the stomach below the band is folded inward and sutured. This procedure effectively reduces the size of the lower portion of the stomach and provides the benefit of restriction from the adjustable gastric band.
In theory, combining these two procedures may accomplish weight loss above that of either of the two procedures alone. Combining the plication procedure with the Adjustable LAP-BAND® may significantly reduce the number of adjustments needed for the LAP-BAND® portion of the surgery, may increase feelings of satiety more quickly, and may increase the rate of weight loss.
While there is limited data on this new weight loss procedure, there continues to be a high level of expectation that the Laparoscopic Banded Plication will become a permanent solution in surgical therapy for weight loss. If you have questions about insurance coverage for the iBand procedure, or would like to speak with a representative about our self-pay options, please contact our office and someone will be glad to assist you. The new iBand is a clinical trial that should be considered investigational. Participation is voluntary and should be discussed with the investigator.
